Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum located 200 km south of New Delhi, India. The main exterior decorative elements, that are grouped into three categories: calligraphy, abstract forms, and vegetative motifs, were created by paint, stone inlays and carvings.

The outside walls are inscribed with many Quranic and historical quotes. Black marble is used for the lettering which is inlaid on the white marble of the structure. This black marble is used to decorate both the main and south gateways of the mausoleum in this calligraphy.

The lettering on the building has a strong emphasis on horizontal and vertical strokes that create an almost grid-like effect. Similar to the Naskh script the Thuluth script uses glyphs above and below the letter. While Naskh uses these glyphs to make the type more legible, Thuluth uses them to beautify the script and make the decorative elements more complicated looking.

Saudi Arabia flag
The current Saudi Arabian flag was designed by Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Al-Saud in 1973 and has been used ever since. In consists of a solid green background with the shahada or Islamic profession of faith written in Thuluth script in white and a sword underneath it.

Similar to the previous examples, glyphs are added above and below the letters. The addition of the glyphs and the placement of the type makes it look like it all fits into a long rectangle. Glyphs and typography can be manipulated to make interesting shapes and patterns.
